Spiral galaxy, M81 and irregular galaxy, M82, in Ursa Major. This close pair presents quite a contrast in structure and in the rate of star formation. This image was taken with an SBIG ST-10XME astronomical CCD camera on a Takahashi FS-102 f/8 refractor. It is a composite of 40 luminance, 20 each of red and green and 40 blue images. Each intergration was 60 seconds, and the color shots were binned 2x2. Taken from near Leakey, Texas, on March 13, 2005. |

The Orion Nebula, M42, in Orion. One of the showpieces of the winter sky, this diffuse nebula glows due to excitation from strong UV radiation from the hot young stars near its center. This image was taken with an SBIG ST-10XME astronomical CCD camera on an FS-102 f/8 refractor. A total of 770 seconds of luminance, 300 seconds each of red and green, and 600 seconds blue were used for this shot. Taken from near Leakey, Texas, on March 12-13. |

The "Leo Triplet", M65, M66, and NGC 3628 in Leo. North is to the right in this view of this close grouping of spiral galaxies, which can be seen in a single low power view in a small telescope. This image was taken with an SBIG ST-10XME astronomical CCD camera mounted on a Takahashi FS-102 f/8 refractor. It is a composite of a total of 1600 seconds of luminance, 800 seconds each of red and green, and 1200 seconds blue. Taken from Leakey, Texas on March 12, 2005. |

The "Flaming Star Nebula", IC-405, in Auriga. This faintly glowing cloud of gas is being excited by UV radiation from the hot star near the center in this image. Taken with an SBIG ST-10XME astronomical CCD camera on a Takahashi FS-102 f/8 refractor. A total of 1600 seconds of luminance, 800 seconds each of red and green, and 1600 seconds blue were combined for this shot. The image was taken from Leakey, Texas on March 12, 2005. |

![]() (Full size 167KB) Allen writes: I have attached an image of M 85 and its companion, NGC 4394. This shot was taken on the night of February 20 - 21 with an SBIG ST-10XME CCD camera and Celestron focal reducer on the C-14 working at about f/6.3. The image is an LRGB composite with twenty one 60 second luminance images binned 2x2, nine 60 second red shots binned 3x3, ten 60 second green frames binned 3x3, and nine 60 second blue images binned 3x3. Processing steps included calibration or reduction with dark frames and flat fields. The luminance image received a gamma-log stretch and L-R deconvolution before being combined with the color data to produce this composite. M 85 isn't much to look at, but NGC 4394 is quite interesting. The image also shows quite a few faint distant galaxies in the sky background. |
![]() (Full size 182KB) Allen Gilchrist writes: Here is a LRGB composite of M96 that I took on the night of February 20. The image was taken on the night of February 20-21, with an SBIG ST-10XME CCD camera on the HAS C-14 working at f/6.3. The image is an LRGB composite consisting of ten 60 second luminance images binned 2x2, and ten each 60 second R, G, and B images binned 3x3. |
![]() (Full size 201KB) Allen writes: Here is a LRGB shot of M27 taken from Ft. Davis, Texas last September. The image was taken with an SBIG ST-10XME CCD camera on a C-8 working at f/6.3. I took twenty 60 sec. luminance, five each 120 sec. exposures in red and green, and ten 120 sec. blue shots. The luminance was unbinned and the color data was binned 2x2. |
![]() (Full size 362KB) Allen writes: Here is an image of M65 and M66. This is an LRGB composite taken last year at the Texas Star Party on the night of April 30 - May 1. The shot was taken with an ST-10XME on a C-8 working at f/6.3. It includes ten 60 second luminance images taken at full resolution. The color data set was taken with the chip binned 2x2, and includes ten 120 second red, ten 120 second green, and seven 240 second blue shots. |
![]() (Full size 168KB) Allen writes: Here is a LRGB composite color image of NGC 891. The image was taken from my observing site near Fort Davis, Texas, last September. It was taken with an ST-10XME CCD camera on a C-8 working at f/6.3. The scope was mounted on a Takahashi NJP-160 mount. The image is a composite of eleven 120 second luminance, five 120 second red, five 120 second green, and ten 120 second blue integrations. The luminance was unbinned, and the color data was binned 2x2. Processing in AIP4WIN included calibration with averaged dark frames and flat fields, stacking, and scaling. The luminance stack was processed with an R-L deconvolution before the color composite was produced. Cosmetic editing to remove bloom spikes and a few other blemishes was done in PhotoStyler before the image was resampled and converted to a JPG to reduce file size. |
![]() (Full size 127KB) Omega Centauri By Allen Gilchrist. The image was taken with an SBIG ST-10XME CCD camera on a C-8 with a Celestron f/6.3 focal reducer. All of this was on a Takahashi NJP-160 mount. The image is a composite of eight 60 second luminance frames taken at full resolution and five 60 second red, five 60 second green, and five 120 second blue shots binned 2x2. |
