FIRST TEXAS TRANSIT OF VENUS HISTORICAL MARKER
TO BE DEDICATED DECEMBER 3!

From Paul D. Maley

This is to alert amateur astronomers that a marker honoring the observation of the Transit of Venus by the American expedition to San Antonio in 1882 from the United States Naval Observatory will be officially dedicated on Dec. 3, 2004. All local amateurs who have an interest in Texas history and its link with astronomy are invited to attend this important commemoration. Outside of McDonald Observatory and the Odessa Meteorite Crater, this would be just the third significant place in the state of Texas to be designated as a "historic location". Based on an initiative by the NASA Johnson Space Center Astronomical Society, the post commander, Gen. Daniel Perugini approved the funds for the creation of the marker in May 2004 and the marker was finished at the factory just recently.
